Advice: Seeking Work at a Small Company Wall Street Journal (blog)

By Alina Dizik

Some small companies offer a less formal hiring process and can make job openings seem less competitive with fewer gatekeepers to impress. Especially, if you’ve been out of the workforce for a while, taking time to dig for opportunities at smaller firms can be a good way to seek out employment. Small “companies are much less likely to be on your competition’s radar and that increases your chances of success in your job search,” says says John Crant, a career coach and founder of selfrecruiter.com. But once you’ve found a position, says Mr. Crant, it’s important to understand what to expect from working at a smaller company, like having less work security and taking on multiple roles.

Here, Mr. Crant talks about finding work at a small company:

What approach should a job seeker take when beginning to look for work at a small business?

Start by finding just one individual with a similar background or skill set as yourself. Do a People Search on LinkedIn to find this starter profile. Take a look at where they worked before joining their current company. Start by creating a list with this first new company name, and continue. Now search their current employer’s name to find other individuals similar to your function. Now you have a list of people to look through and this is where you can begin to create a larger list. These are companies that individuals, similar to yourself, went to work for after leaving this current company. Some will inevitably be larger companies that you have heard about, but many will be these smaller companies that you have never heard of before.

my friend is in desperate need of debt advice, she is a homeowner, who are the best people to help.?

she doesnt want another loan,or to be charged for the debt advice,we live in the north-east of england.

C.A.B. Make an appointment to see a Money Advisor. Your friend will need to take all relevant paperwork concerning her bills, debts, threatening letters, etc.

Tell her to call the CCCS, they arent a debt management company, they are a charity and will give her free advice regarding her situation. If needed, they will also help her and its all free or charge.

There the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Citizen Advice are the best people to go to , you can also phone advice is FREE, and they are great they will do all they can to help your friend make calls write letters for her etc

Hi
Tell your friend to get advice now. As said cccs will help and will not charge as will many companys that will not charge for initial advice. If she has equity she could release some and pay the debts or look at a full and final iva. Bankrupcy she could lose her home so prob not an option.. She can get loads of advice online as well iva info.co.uk gives great advice on the forum and ther are insolvency practioners that give advice. She would not be judged and would get good sound advice from people who have gone through the debt process and are now coming out the other side.
Hope this helps

Best of luck to her.

First port of call should be the "Get out of Debt" section on The Motley Fool...... regarded as the best debt advice place anywhere.
http://www.fool.co.uk/get-out-of-debt/get-out-of-debt.aspx

Kate Hughes is spot on, CCCS are the best. Don't go to one of the companies that advertise on TV, they'll charge you a massive fee to set up an arrangement, CCCS don't charge a thing to the consumer and they are respected by the financial industry.

please help with advice, tips . How to get out of Debt.?

LIve ine canada and need anything that can help me get out of high interest debt . I am doing everything I can to possibily lower interest rates and have reasonable monthly payment. Depressed by debt amount but ready to fight and get some help to rebuild my financial life. Please help need advice, tips any information useful for me. God bless all of the people that would kindly answer my question without insulting me. Note that I live in Canada so take that into account in you help and informatons

I would just add a couple things. First, congratulations on asking for help. Plenty of debt here in the US and many keep their heads in the sand. I agree with the credit card advice. Credit cards are only for true emergencies! Not the new TV, etc.

You can get a second job to generate more income and/or cut expenses. Sell whatever you don't need at a garage sale. If you have a high car payment, sell it and pay cash for a used vehicle.
Perhaps sell your house, move to a cheaper apartment. Just look at all your expenses....good luck

stop buying unnecessary things when you dont have the money.

You should look in the phone book for debt counseling agencies, you have a common problem and these people have the knowledge and tools to help you, good luck.

I don't know the rules or laws in Canada regarding debt but some of this is applicable no matter where you live.

If you are only paying the minimum payment on credit cards, you will be in debt forever. Credit card minimum payments are really set up to keep you in debt. The bank is charging you interest every month, after all. The less you pay, the more interest they get to charge you next month.

As hard as it may be, you are going to have to cut back somewhere and start paying more off every month on those credit cards. Whatever you can afford to pay over the minimum payment is going to help.

Do NOT charge any more on the cards. The last thing you want right now is to increase your debt. Take the card with the highest interest rate and start paying as much as you can on it. Even if it's just an extra $20 a month. Once you start paying extra on them, you'll see the total amount owed start to go down faster and faster. Once you have that first one paid in full, take a deep breath and congratulate yourself on a job well done and start on the next one. All the money you were sending to the one you just paid, you now add that to the minimum payment on the next one. Obviously, you have to make at least the minimum payment on all of them every month but work on one of them at a time and get them paid off.

If they all have the same interest rate, start with the one with the lowest balance.

Get yourself on a budget. Look around at what you're spending money on every month and figure out where you can cut back until you get this under control.

It's not a lot of fun for a while but the sense of satisfaction you get when you get these paid off will be so worth it.

Then you'll be able to start taking some of that money and save it or invest it so that the next time you want a new CD player or something, you'll have the money to pay for it in case and won't go into debt again.

Good luck.

Seriously, you need to pay off your debt, that is the only way out, if your debt is so bad, then call a debt program and see if they can help you.

I think the following article should help you. You can visit the website to know more about the article:

Debt Consolidation

A debt consolidation program helps to get out of all high interest debts. There are various types of debt consolidation loans.

Home equity loan is one such debt consolidation program where a person can use home to get a loan..............

I need help and advice about debt, help?

I really have lots of questions, and I dont know who to ask. I have been off sick from work and am getting barley any money, I have so much debt that I cannot pay, let alone the usual bills phone, electricity, rent etc. Also the debt people are phoning constantly and now the phone has been cut off...... will they send someone round? What do they say? what can I say to them? I have no money.... Will they be adamant and not leave? will they try and take stuff from my house? does anyone know the process? and how to handle the situation?,,,,,any advice would be so helpful to me,,,, thank you

The Citizens Advice Bureau will be able to give you good advice

you should call your creditors and explain that you are not working at the moment ask them to accept reduced payments of a set amount each week/month depending on what you have coming in. you'll find these people are willing to accept any payment rather than none! good luck

They won't send anyone around unless they're local. They can contact you but harassment is illegal. They can call friends, too. You probably had to give 2 or 3 contacts when you took out the loan. Borrow a phone and call everyone. Do it on a regular basis. This will cut out the need for them to contact you or friends. Live on no more than absolutely necessary and apply the rest to the debt. If you are working, you keep in touch with your creditors, and you pay what you say you will (even though it's very little) when you say you will, most creditors will work with you. That doesn't answer all your questions, please go to daveramsey.com.

Creditors often use the tactic of harassing their debtors, presumably in the hope that they will suddenly and miraculously find a large lump of cash that they had forgotten about. Sit down and sort out what you owe and to whom. Contact each company and explain your situation. Try to arrange reduced payments. If you are in the UK contact the CAB and make an appointment to see them, they are excellent about advice and will even write letters for you. they can also advise about benefits to which you may be entitled. Whatever you do, don't ignore any letters from creditors. If any creditors have passed your debt onto a collections agency don't worry they have no right to remove anything from your home or even to enter your home despite what they might say. the only way items can be removed from your home is by court order and if proceedings have been issued you will be informed by the Court. There is a load more advice I could give you, if you need to know anything else please leave a message for me under your question

Don t panic !there is help avaidable . it does take time to sort out . i found the consumer credit counselling service really helpful.you do have to try and sort out priority arrears like rent first.

if you pay for your home, and utilities.
and pay ZERO to all unsecured crditors.

they will charge off the debt as bad. then they sell the debt to a third party for about 10 cents on the dollar.

they will just wait around until you get solvent again then try to collect.

if you can live on cash and have no debt again , in ten years it will all just go away.

find a way to be self employed, like cleaning nice offices at night. only wages can be garnished, not revenue from a company you own.

after a messy divorce i defaulted on 60,000.00 in credit card debt, and ten years later it all dissappeared from my credit report. of course i learned my lesson and only live on what i earn, no debt, it feels great !!!

you could try and remortgage your house... I hope all goes well, its no fun with no money, i know all about it.

Best wishes

First of all get to Citizens advice bureau if your in UK

They will make sure you are receiving all benefits you are entitled to...eg rent...council tax

They will also refer you to a money advisor/specialist. You will be advised to stop paying all the non priority creditors and make sure your priorities are paid eg.. rent gas elec etc etc

When the creditors phone you tell them you will be seeing the CAB and if they dont back off state that their contacting you is harrassment...( that works)

No one can take anything from your home unless a court has said they can....baliffs

Where do you go to find debt advice?

We all know that debt advice should be impartial. Other then government organisations, who do you trust to give you reliable debt advice?

Go to the public library and read a few books on getting out of debt. You can solve your own problems without spending money you don't have on "credit counseling." This is a very empowering option and you will use your new-found financial management skills for the rest of your life.

There are no "government organizations" offering financial services, debt counseling, etc.

There are non-profit counseling organizations, but be careful as many organizations claiming to help people become "debt free" or manage your credit card debt are organized as "non-profit organizations" but are expensive and hazardous to your financial health. There are too many and new ones crop up too frequently to track their names and too many ways to scam people to begin to list them all.

There are nonprofit organizations that provide financial counseling. Government organizations, in general, do not dispense "debt advice."

Who do you recommend in the uk for financial advice & debt management, and help in all sorts of financial?

difficulties. What are your views on both C.C.C.S. and The Citizens Advice Bureau? Are they any good?Is anyone with Payplan or Credit Action? Does anyone recommend bankcruptcy, rather than say debt management?or is it better to just stick to doing debt management even if it takes ten yrs or more to clear all your debts?I am a divorced single middle aged mum who cant work as i'm disabled,i'm on benefits, and the stress and pressure and worry about all my debts AND being behind on several household bills is just too much for me to cope with any longer.I've also got a contract phone thats a struggle to keep on top of.I'm only two months in to a 18 month contract.I only got a contract as i saw a mobile i liked but obviously could never afford to buy so the only way to get it was to take out a contract.I didnt expect this but my first bill was pro-rata and more than the £35 a month i was told, and it came in 10 days after taking out the contract.I thought it wouldnt come in for a month.

Get yourself an appointment with the CAB as soon as possible...

You'll get tons of free advice on the message boards at moneysavingexpert.com :o)

To be honest, it would be in your interest to contact the UK Insolvency Helpline - http://www.insolvencyhelpline.co.uk/ A freephone service - excellent.

Don't worry. Your debs are so small compared to many others. Go to the Citizens Advice for FREE advice, they will sort it all out for you and contact the companies involved. DO NOT go to any company that charges you.

You haven't really said you are in debt just that you are having problems paying day to day bills. As you are unemployed a you could not do a debt management plan, or IVA as it is called, you have to be working for that. Contact CAB, they were fantastic with me. Don't know if you can go bankrupt either but they can help in contacting you debtors and maybe come to some arrangement with them to ease your burden. Other option is get a job A.S.A.P.

Sorry missed the bit where you are disabled. Are you getting all the benefits you are entitled to. Check with Jobcentre

to be honest I think they all are rubbish reason being is that I work for a major energy company and believe it or not when people have no money the first thing they 'forget' to pay is their electricity and gas bills. I deal with the correspondence sent in and we get thousands of letters a week from the CAB, Payplan, Christians against Poverty(CAP) to name a few all with extensive lists of how much debt their client is in and why they cant afford to pay the the electricity and gas they are using. They come up with ridiculous payment arrangements like £1 per month to pay off £1000 debt. That would take 80 years to pay off!!! are they for real. I feel like calling them and asking them what the hell are they getting paid for. People have their prioities all wrong. maybe go to them for a little advice but dont get them to try and sort out arrangements for you as majority of them will get turned down as they are so outrageous.

I have been in your situation and I went to the CAB office and they were brilliant. They were able fend off the debt chasers so that I had time to think and sort myself out. They even arranged a free session with the solicitor so that I was not reposessed.

Ironically I am training to be an accountant and am three years away from being a chartered accountant.

Please use the CAB office and do not miss any appointments.

debt advice!!! help?

i visited my local CAB office recently for advice on paying 600.00 council tax bill which is now in the hands of the bailiffs and 2 parking tickets to which the baliffs want 800.00 i have recently moved in with my new partner and am scared to death that if they find me living here they will seize his goods. CAB said they could not help me with these kinds of debt and im afraid to call bailiffs in case they want my new address can i tell them to carry on sending my mail to my house which i currently rent out or can i give my works address as a contact address for any mail they want to send me.Do you think i should just call them to make a payment arrangement because i do want to pay off this debt to stop all of the sleepness nights im having. The only possesions i have is my car and my house i dont have any household goods as it all belongs to my new fella could they take his stuff cos im sure he wont have receipts for everything.
no me and my new fella aren't legally bound.

It is in your best interest to address these issues head on. If you do not they can/will give this to a debt collector who can file a small claims court. If you fail to appear for the court hearing they can issue a default (meaning you owe AND they can get interest, costs etc so you can owe more than you really do.) If you still don't pay after the default (which will be on your credit report for 10 years and will have a serious negative effect on your credit) then they can file a supplementary process which allows them to continue their efforts to collect the debt. They can ask the Judge/Court for permission to seize your bank account or our car. They can also put a lien on your house. They do not want your personal goods (what good would it do them?). They want things that have real value cars/house/bank accounts.

I would strongly recommend that you call the creditors and enter into a payment plan. You should also ask that the payment plan stop any accruing interest WHILE you are paying and that if you stop paying then they can collect any interest. This will keep you motivated to paying the debts and it will show them that you are serious about getting this issue resolved.

The longer you avoid this issue the worse it will get and then you will be unable to fix the problem.

Is there any agency or service that will give advice or help to restructure education debt?

(Traditional "credit solution" type agencies won't even talk about educational loans. ) My loans are so old and dispersed that I need help figuring out who I owe what to - Does anyone help with that?

Contact the college directly (You can probably do this on the net) Ask for the Financial Aid Dept. If you are far away you can set up a telephone app.

DO NOT go through a credit company who wants to lower your payments, you will pay much more in the end and the people who now own the debt will not even speak to you.

This is the web page for Federal loans. If it is a school loan from them you can start here.

I NEED DEBT ADVICE Please help me! I have debt totalling around ten thousand pounds.?

The debts include a £5000 (15.9%apr) loan (really 6700 once it is paid off) a £1500 overdraft with natwest(18%apr) house of fraser store card with £400 (29.3%apr) and a natwest creditcard with £400. I also have about £600 in little debts. I really don't know what to do I am a single mum on benefits although I have just got a job for a few evenings a week which will help but at the moment i'm living on a credit card and I don't know what to do I don't want to go down the iva or bankruptcy as that would cause more problems and I'm still young and don't want to ruin my credit score anymore than it is. I have tried to consolidate the debts but as I have a poor credit rating I can't get any decent deals and I don't want to borrow even more money than I already owe. Does anyone know of a REPUTABLE company that will give me a loan for a lower apr than the one I have already or anyother advice. I have spoken to debt counsellors but I don't class as owing enough for any real help.

I have about the same amount of debt as you and I am now with Consumer Credit Counseling Services. Basically I send them money every month and they distribute it to each of my credit cards. They were also able to lower all of my interest rates a lot. I will be debt free in about 4 years compared to probably 20 if I would have kept paying the minimum on my cards. The thing is you have to STOP using your cards to make any head way.

Any advice with Debt help?

I need to find a good trusting company to work with my debt. I am behind on payments and I need to get some kind of debt consolidator.. Thanks for your Advice..

Have you tried to work a payment plan yourself with those whom you are in debt?I'd give that a try

help with debt advice?

i am looking for a good place to go to give me advice on debt? i live in glasgow and really want to get the problem sorted. my ex left me with 19 thousand pounds of debt all in my name. i know i was stupid to agree but felt too scared to say no!

As above. C.A.B. should be your first port of call. Not only can they offer financial advice they can also offer legal advice. If you were pressured into taking out the loans and can prove that your ex had all the benefit from it (for example, you took out a loan and it went straight into his account) you may be able to get the debt transferred. It's a long shot, but , I just divorced and found that my ex had run up £18k in ny name without my knowing. It took 2 years but the entire debt was transferred to him!! Good luck to you, hope it all works out one way or the other.
