Despite explaining she could not owe the money as she paid for her electricity on a pay-as-you go top up card which plugs into the meter, E.ON refused to believe her.
The last straw came after the pensioner was received 30 phone calls from Utility Debt Services (UDS) - E.ON's debt collection arm.
She was told bailiffs would be sent to her home and threatened with a bankruptcy petition - even though at least £750 must be owed for one to be sent out.
Mrs Coleman from Luton, Beds., decided to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) who ranked the harassment as ''one of the worst cases ever seen''.
After contacting E.ON, CAB discovered employees at the energy company had made an administrative mistake.
Elizabeth, whose sister Wendy, also died during the 18 month period, said she was horrified at her treatment by E.ON and had lived ''in terror'' for the last 18 months.
She said: ''This whole thing has been a horrible experience and I have received dozens of letters and phone calls which were very rude and threatening.
