It's a time of year full of small, wonderful surprises, from the smile on the face of your grumpy neighbor to the sparkling snow that transforms the dull landscape into a glittering vista.

And right around the corner is the new year, when last year's bad habits, hurt feelings, unfinished business and mistakes will be forgotten. The new year starts with purpose, resolutions and a shiny, new sense of optimism that anything is possible.

This year, we asked writers and critics in The Buffalo News' Features Department — where all things about Western New York's Lifestyles, Arts and Entertainment are examined — to imagine that this holiday-fueled magical feeling was a literal magic lamp containing a genie who would grant them three wishes. (And no, the first wish couldn't be more wishes, sorry!)

We assumed everybody would ask for world peace, a cure for cancer and freedom from poverty and hunger — quickly followed by a lottery win and a time machine — so we gave them some rules.
